The story of a place

The history of WUEB was described by Tamara Khorazhevska in her book Komandorska 118/120. The story of a place:

“In the winter of 1947. The first students of the Higher School of Economics gathered in the main building of the University of Wroclaw. February 3 prof. Vincent Styś delivered an inaugural lecture on Quesney’s economic theory. Thus began the history of today’s Wroclaw University of Economics and Business.”

Before the war:
The St. Jude Hospital. Wenzel-Hancke

WUEB’s current campus was built on the site of the pre-war St. John’s Hospital. Johann Wenzel-Hancke. Remnants of that era can still be found on campus today. The main gate from the 16th century and the brick buildings are the best visible, but monuments from the Breslau era also include gazebos, gazebos or the bas-relief over the entrance to Building B.

During the siege of Festung Breslau, heavy fighting took place in the south of the city. After the debris was cleaned up, the south of Wroclaw was covered with fields, meadows and wasteland. Until the 1970s. In the 1970s, the buildings of the former hospital were the only major buildings in the area.

WSH, later WSE

The history of today’s WUEB begins in 1947. Earlier this year, the first Rector Prof. Kamil Stefko issued a letter announcing the start of enrollment at the newly established private School of Economics (WSH), which was established as early as 1950. It was transformed into the state-owned Higher School of Economics (WSE).

Initially, classes were held in the buildings of Wroclaw University, and later also in the building of today’s High School No. XVII. However, it soon became apparent that the growing university needed more space – hence the move to Komandorska Street.

Times of the Academy of Economics

1960s. i 70. is a time of intensive development of the university. In 1964. As part of the “Spring of Students” initiative, the first Economalia was held. In 1969. Branch in Jelenia Gora was launched, at that time also many new buildings were built (including SWFiS and dormitories), and computerization began.

With the inauguration of the 1974/1975 academic year, the EEZ was renamed as the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Economics. Oskar Lange. Also dating from this period is an unrealized plan to expand the campus area to include land extending all the way to Staff Street.

WUEB today

March 18, 2008. The Academy of Economics received a new name: the Wroclaw University of Economics and Business. It is worth mentioning that only universities with an academic category of A+, A or B+ in at least six scientific disciplines are authorized to use the word “university” in their name.

We are proud to continue the more than 75-year history of the Wroclaw University of Economics and Business, which, although it has operated under different names, has presented a consistently high quality of research and education. During this time we have already educated about a hundred thousand graduates.

Get in the game at WUEB so we can shape the future together!
