On 3 June 2026, we invite you to the 79th Wroclaw University of Economics and Business Day. The celebrations will be combined with a ceremony to award a doctorate honoris causa to Eric Maskin.
The Wroclaw University of Economics and Business (WUEB) Anniversary commemorates the date of the first academic lecture delivered on 3 February 1947 by Professor Wincenty Styś. To mark this date in a fitting manner, we will gather on 3 June 2026 in the distinguished company of Professors, Staff and Alumni. In addition to members of the WUEB community, we will also welcome guests and friends of our University.
The ceremony will also provide an opportunity to present awards to the most distinguished members of UEW staff.
Doctorate honoris causa for Eric Maskin

During this year’s University Day celebrations, we will award an honorary doctorate to Professor Eric Maskin – a distinguished American economist, professor of economics and mathematics at Harvard University, and winner of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel (2007) for co-developing game theory.
The Senate of the Wrocław University of Economics has decided to honour Prof. Maskin with the highest honorary title for his “fundamental contribution to the development of mechanism design theory and implementation theory – fields that enable the design of markets, regulations and public institutions in a way that allows social objectives to be achieved despite conflicting interests among participants and imperfect information”. The monotonicity condition formulated by Prof. Maskin in 1977 is today one of the cornerstones of modern microeconomics.
The role of supervisor in the proceedings for the award of the title was performed bythe Rector of the University of Economics in Wrocław, Prof. Czesław Zając. Reviews of the candidate’s academic output were prepared by Prof. Marek Kośny, Vice-Rector for Research at the University of Economics in Wrocław, and Prof. Marian Gorynia, of the University of Economics in Poznań. All reviews contained an unequivocal recommendation to award the title.
