The Wrocław University of Economics and Business is providing students with new rooms in the ‘Ślężak’ dorm. These have been created based on the winning student design.
Modernised rooms offer functional accomodation, designed with students’ needs in mind. Twenty-four refurbished rooms are available to residents of the ‘Ślężak’ dormitory. Their refurbishment was carried out based on the winning concept developed by WUEB student Natalia Lewandowska. During the implementation of the project, the key design principles regarding functionality, ergonomics and comfort of use were retained.
The new rooms are the result of an initiative in which students under the supervision of Dr Agata Pluta, prepared four concepts for the layout of living spaces in the hall of residence. When developing the designs, they took into account the needs, comments and expectations of the hall of residence residents regarding the functionality and comfort of everyday use of the rooms.
From among the four proposals submitted, the residents chose the concept prepared by Natalia Lewandowska, who explained the details of her concept:
Taking part in this project was a brilliant opportunity for me to develop my passion for interior design. I was absolutely delighted to have the chance to take part and decided to apply without a moment’s hesitation! As a student, my main aim was to create a space that met the real needs of its users. I wanted to prioritise functionality, comfort and plenty of storage space, whilst ensuring that every flatmate had at least a little bit of their own space.
Prof. Czesław Zając, Rector of the WUEB, emphasised how important the students’ involvement in the project had been:
This is a unique project because it was devised entirely by the students themselves. Whilst developing their concepts, they listened carefully to the needs of the hall of residence residents and proposed solutions based on their everyday experiences. I am delighted that we were able to use the winning concept as the basis for modernising the rooms and to incorporate the students’ key ideas into the actual space of the hall of residence. This is the best proof that it is worthwhile to involve young people in the development of our University.
As part of a project worth over 400,000 zł, twenty-four rooms on the third floor of the Ślężak hall of residence were refurbished. The scope of work included installing new electrical wiring and fitting the rooms with new furniture. The beds were complemented by built-in shelving and cupboards, as well as individual LED lighting to enable comfortable reading and studying in the evenings. The rooms were also fitted with compact kitchen units, additional bookshelves and Wi-Fi access. Residents can now enjoy more modern and functional conditions for studying, relaxing and everyday life.
