Wroclaw University of Economics and Business Day 2026

On 3 June 2026 we gathered to celebrate the 79th Anniversary of the Wroclaw University of Economics and Business (WUEB). The celebrations was combined with a ceremony to award a doctorate honoris causa to Professor Eric S. Maskin.

The Wroclaw University of Economics and Business (WUEB) Anniversary commemorates the date of the first academic lecture delivered on 3 February 1947 by Professor Wincenty Styś. To mark this date, we annualy gather in the distinguished company of Professors, Staff and Alumni. In addition to members of the WUEB community, we will also welcome guests and friends of our University. The ceremony also provides an opportunity to present awards to the most distinguished members of WUEB staff.

Doctorate honoris causa for Eric Maskin

Eric Maskin

During this year’s University Day celebrations, we awarded an honorary doctorate to Professor Eric Maskin – a distinguished American economist, professor of economics and mathematics at Harvard University, and winner of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel (2007, with Leonid Hurwicz and Roger Myerson) for co-developing game theory.

The Senate of the Wrocław University of Economics has decided to honour Prof. Maskin with the highest honorary title for his “fundamental contribution to the development of mechanism design theory and implementation theory – fields that enable the design of markets, regulations and public institutions in a way that allows social objectives to be achieved despite conflicting interests among participants and imperfect information”. The monotonicity condition formulated by Prof. Maskin in 1977 is today one of the cornerstones of modern microeconomics.

The role of supervisor in the proceedings for the award of the title was performed by the Rector of the WUEB, Prof. Czesław Zając. Reviews of the candidate’s academic output were prepared by Prof. Marek Kośny, Vice-Rector for Research at the WUEB, and Prof. Marian Gorynia, of the Poznań University of Economics. All reviews contained an unequivocal recommendation to award the title.

We would kindly thank all the guests who took part in this year’s WUEB Day. Once again, we congratulate Professor Eric S. Maskin on being awarded an honorary doctorate by the Wroclaw University of Economics and Business. See you next year at our University’s 80th anniversary celebrations!
