WUEB researchers join consortium investigating oat beta-glucan in intestinal disease research

Wrocław University of Economics and Business is a partner in a consortium implementing a National Science Centre-funded project on the use of an amino acid and oat beta-glucan blend as potential support in the treatment of ulcerative colitis.

The project is led by Warsaw University of Life Sciences. The consortium also includes Wrocław University of Economics and Business and The Kielanowski Institute of Animal Physiology and Nutrition, Polish Academy of Sciences. The total project value is PLN 3,269,661, with WUEB’s budget amounting to PLN 1,101,660. NCN registration number: 2025/59/B/NZ4/03357.

On the WUEB side, the work is led by Prof. Joanna Harasym (DSc, PhD, Eng.) from the Department of Food Biotechnology and Analysis, Faculty of Engineering and Production [to be verified: current official name of the unit]. The WUEB team is responsible for developing a modern method for obtaining and characterising an amino acid and oat beta-glucan blend. The team also includes a postdoctoral researcher and a doctoral student.

The preparation and characterisation of the blend form the first stage of the project and provide the basis for further in vivo studies. Subsequent tasks include assessing the effects of the blend in a porcine model of ulcerative colitis and analysing gut-microbiota-liver axis activity.

The project continues Prof. Harasym’s long-term research specialisation in beta-glucan. It is the second consortium grant involving SGGW and other institutions, and the fifth joint OPUS grant by Prof. Harasym and SGGW concerning beta-glucan
